An Eye Exam Taught Me Why My Clients Are Always Surprised by Their Photos
An eye exam taught me why my clients are always surprised by their photos.
I never needed glasses most of my life. And then my mid-40s arrived and everything changed.
Reading glasses first. Then distance. Then midrange. Ten years later, here we are.
Yesterday was my annual exam. Vision changed again — fourth or fifth year running. My doctor suggested trying multifocal contact lenses. I’d never worn contacts before. Getting them in took a while. There was a learning curve. There may have been some quiet frustration involved.
Then I walked over to the mirror.
And I could actually see myself. Clearly. No glasses. Just my face, unfiltered.
The thing is — I’d spent a decade seeing myself with glasses on. That became my face. My normal. Glasses-off in the mirror had always been this squinted, uncertain blur I didn’t linger on.
But with the contacts? Clarity. And my first thought was: damn girl, you look pretty good.
I hadn’t recognized myself. And then I did.
That’s exactly what happens in my studio.
People come in for headshots bracing for the worst. Convinced the camera will confirm every insecurity they’ve been quietly carrying around. The bad LinkedIn photo. The awkward Zoom screenshot. The DMV moment. That’s their reference point for what they look like on camera.
And then I turn the screen around.
I watch their face change. Every time.
Wait. Is that me?
Yes. That’s always been you. You just couldn’t see it clearly.
That’s not me being nice. That’s not flattering lighting tricks. That’s what happens when someone who knows what they’re doing actually takes the time to see you — to direct you, to wait for the real expression, to catch the moment when you stop performing and just exist in front of the camera.
Most people have never had that experience. They’ve had a camera pointed at them. That’s different.
I photograph executives, attorneys, financial advisors, physicians, and team leaders across Philadelphia and the Main Line. 5,500+ professionals. 174 five-star reviews. And in ten years, the moment that never gets old is that one.
Wait. Is that me?
Yes. Come find out.
