“What should I wear?” is the question I get most often when someone books a headshot session. And I get it - you want to look professional, current, and like yourself all at the same time.

Here’s my best advice after photographing thousands of professionals: wear what makes you feel confident and represents how you want to be perceived in your industry.

The Headshot Wardrobe Formula

Solid Colors Work Best: Patterns and busy prints compete with your face. Stick to solid colors that complement your skin tone and the background you’ll use.

Necklines Matter: V-necks and open collars are universally flattering. They elongate your neck and draw the eye to your face. Avoid crew necks and turtlenecks unless that’s very on-brand for you.

Professional ≠ Uncomfortable: You don’t need to wear a suit if you never wear suits. A nice sweater or blouse can be just as professional and will photograph better if it’s more “you.”

Colors That Photograph Well

  • Jewel Tones: Deep blues, teals, burgundy, emerald green
  • Neutrals: Navy, charcoal, black, cream
  • Earth Tones: Rust, olive, warm browns

Colors to Avoid:

  • Bright white (reflects too much light, can glow)
  • Neon or very bright colors (distract from your face)
  • Colors that match the background exactly (you’ll blend in)

The Multi-Outfit Strategy

I recommend bringing 2-3 outfit options to your session. This gives us:

  • A more formal option for conservative uses
  • A casual/approachable look for social media
  • A backup if something isn’t working on camera

We can usually shoot 2-3 different looks in a standard session, giving you variety and options for different contexts.

Quick Wardrobe Checklist

✓ Solid colors that complement your skin tone ✓ Something you feel confident and comfortable in ✓ Well-fitting (not too tight, not too baggy) ✓ Freshly pressed or steamed ✓ Appropriate for your industry ✓ Represents your current professional image

What About Accessories?

Keep it simple: Small, classic jewelry that doesn’t distract. Avoid anything that sparkles too much or makes noise when you move.

Glasses: Absolutely wear them if you normally do! We can handle any glare issues in editing.

Ties: Optional and industry-dependent (see my other post on ties!)

The Bottom Line

Your outfit should support your headshot, not steal the show. The goal is for people to look at your photo and think “That person looks professional, confident, and approachable” - not “Nice shirt!”

When in doubt, bring options and we’ll figure out what works best together.
