Most client gifts are forgotten in a day. A headshot gets used for years — and every time your client posts it or updates a profile, your thoughtfulness is part of the story.
The session itself is the real gift. Time together, relaxed, with you in the room — that's a connection you can't buy in a gift basket. People remember how the day felt.
And the timing is built in. The portrait lands a few days after the session, which gives you a genuine, useful reason to reach back out — not a sales call, a kindness. That's the difference between staying in touch and being remembered.
Delivery is different on purpose. At a Happy Hour people leave with their photo, Light Edits done on the spot, because that is the whole draw of a walk-up event. On a Prospecting Day or a Curated List I hold them back a day or two deliberately: everyone picks their favorite frame with me in the room, I finish them properly once I'm back at the studio, and the portraits landing a couple of days later is what gives you a reason to be in touch again. If you want them hand retouched instead, say so and I'll quote it that way.
FINRA moved the gift limit from $100 to $300 back in March. A day works out at $100 a head, so it sits under either number. Plenty of firms kept their own $100 policy internally — worth a quick check with your compliance desk either way.
